Indie-brand Actual Pain enjoys promoting the darker side of life surrounding mysticism and pop-culture. The result is a rather interesting style collection, ranging from tees to leggings to hats and jewelry, each adorned with a litany of sigils that usually invoke fear or disdain in most monotheists. For those of you who don't know what a "sigil" is, let us enlighten you:
an inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magical power. The term has usually referred to a type of pictorial signature of a demon
or other entity; in modern usage, especially in the context of chaos magic
, it refers to a symbolic representation of the magician's desired outcome.
Essentially, these notions delve into some pretty heavy concepts, where rich philosophical and psychological understandings are necessary to comprehend fully before any sort of successful individualized departure and practice could take place.. but hey. fASHLIN isn't too concerned with the "magick" of it all, at least not as much as the principles of intent behind methodically placing such demonstrative symbols onto the clothing in the first place. You have heard our rant before (spilling into the 'comments' section..
) regarding the misuse of the St. Peter's Cross (or the "inverted cross") in mainstream clothing as being nothing more than a design-gimmick to attract attention by any means necessary. Actual Pain, however, seems to not be just another design hack company, arbitrarily placing "controversial" symbols in lackluster designs for monetary gain. Their simple use of sigils and symbolism appear to exist solely as a medium for broadcasting clearly defined messages of allegiance towards their own belief system. With that being said, can you fault an individual for keeping it real, even if their reality is your personal nightmare? Think about your answer. Isn't it better if an individual is open and honest with themselves, so in turn you can fairly discern your future relationship with this person? We think so. Not only do you owe it to yourself to be veritably genuine, you owe it to the universe and its inhabitants you affect. With the amount of dark fashion trending in popularity, fASHLIN can appreciate the amount of raw authenticity that Actual Pain summons to their style circle. A bit of humour, sociopolitical whimsy and an overall occultist mindset has proven to be a winning elixir of darker fashion proportions.
